A slow start on the week, made us decide to go exploring other places. First a party of 4 rods went to Santa Cruz to see if the steelheads had arrived.
Even though it’s still early season we managed to get a steelhead on the bank and also lost a couple, so not a bad day this early. Anyway everybody agreed it was an experience they wouldn’t have been without.
The day after another group went to the top of the Rio Gallegos with more luck than those who went for the steelheads. in total they landed a handful nice sized sea-trout up to 11 lbs and on top of that some very nice browns.
The night between Wednesday and Thursday the river rose from –35cm to +25 a rise of 60 cm (2 feet), with a slight colouring of the water. This meant an immediately change in the fishing, and already in the morning we saw the first silver-bright new fish straight from the sea.
The numbers increased during the day, and the largest fish of the week was caught that night. We hoped for the water to settle during the night, but it rose again Friday morning, with another 15cm, and turned a bit more coloured.
Due to the rise in water, the fishing technique changed from highly technical, with smaller nymphs and fine presentations, to heavier rods and lines, fishing big black tubes.
At the same time the water temperature to dropped to 3C only rising a couple of degrees during the day.
Again we were getting afraid about someone blank a week, but Jan Frederik decide to save his luck for the last 36 hours ending the Friday with two 11 lbs’ , so far still no one’s blanked a week here…………

The prospect for the coming week: If you have any thoughts of going? This would have been the week to go! The river is in flood and it’s full moon now, so high tides in the sea. But as always in fishing, you can never change the weather, can you?
