RIO GALLEGOS SEA TROUT
Week Reports 2009
Week 06 - Combi 2

Last half of week 6, continued more or less like the first half, water stabilized around -27cm but on Friday night it started raining and the river rose by Saturday morning to -12cm and then again during the afternoon up to +35cm. Fish is still holding in the larger pools, but fish starts to show up in the faster runs which is a good sign of fish running.

Lars Ivarsson and Raymond Stonell was reasonably easy going, but of course Raymond's got almost another week with us. Lars started out the first day getting a nice fish of around 6 lbs, but finished Friday night with a good fish out of Old Bridge. Raymond, probably knowing he's got plenty of time, showed that he truly is a gentleman and left all the fish for Lars (yes, it also came as a surprise to the rest of us).

Sverker Sundberg and Peter Sundberg both being Swedish “fishing-nerds” started out with consistently  catching fish, not many, but enough to bring Henrik Larsson to the edge (and over) of desperation.... when he finally got his fish Friday evening, it was like a transformation of personality.

If Peter ever comes back we'll find a system to tie his camera to his waders! Bringing a nice Leica camera all the way down here, and then leaving it on the table in the lodge is not too smart-Per Frier and his son Henrik Frier, who's both been here before (Per around 8 times) know the deal, and Per started out with a blast, when he the first night landed no less than two fish of 17½ lbs. Henrik started a bit slower, and maybe should have checked his nylon before tying it on, while he Friday night hooked, played and lost no less that four fish in about an hour.

Jan Karlsson and Jussi Sjölund pretended to be the most “laid-back” group, but only when in the lodge and around the others. Jussi even tried his special trick on Friday night (one have to remember he is Finnish) pouring redwine on everyone, maybe in the hope of getting another chance of Canterra where he and Jan landed 5 fish on Friday night, must be said that Jan got the 4 of them.

River is rising as this is written, how much is not sure yet, but it doesn't look like a flood that'll keep us off the river. Most likely it'll end up with just a perfect water-level encouraging new fish to enter the river. Friday night we saw a lot, and I mean A LOT of fish running up on the lower beat. Typically when the fish runs they start showing in the lower part of the pool by night fall and after a short while you see them “head and tail” up through the pool. They doesn't seem to move too fast, so we think we're in good shape.

During this week, most fish has been caught during the last hours of the day, on either Sun Rays, Zonkers or Wolly-Buggers, but with the rise in water we hope they'll be more cooperative during daytime.
Water level from -27 to +35cm and temperature between 8,5 and 13C.
